Last Monday we were very pleased to host Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan) at Chelmsford where he took a Master class on the Bunkai for Kata Heian Shodan.
Sensei Rhodes needs no introduction for those people who have trained with him on the KUGB's Black & Brown Belt Courses and the Torbay and Lancaster "Train With The Champions" courses. His creative applications of Kata Bunkai have both excited and bewildered us at the same time and last Mondays course in Chelmsford was no exception.
Sensei Rhodes took the class through Kata – Heian Shodan. Although this is essentially a basic Kata he showed how it can be interpreted and performed at an advanced level. In doing so, he showed how the Kata can be adapted from it’s pure form and then split it into sections to perform a dynamic display of bunkai (application of Kata) against three attackers. The techniques applied were both creative and effective, forcing the defender to constantly think of their body position and balance to both block and counter their multiple opponents.
It was an excellent course and everyone who attended learnt a lot.
We would like to thank Sensei Bob Rhodes for teaching at Chelmsford SKC's and look forward to hosting him again later this year.
