Last Friday we were very pleased to host Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan) at Chelmsford where he took a Master class on the Bunkai for Kata Empi.
Sensei Rhodes needs no introduction for those people who have trained with him on the KUGB's Black & Brown Belt Courses and the Torbay and Lancaster "Train With The Champions" courses. His creative applications of Kata Bunkai have both excited and bewildered us at the same time and last Fridays course in Chelmsford was no exception.
Sensei Rhodes took a class of Black and Brown Belts through Kata – Empi. He taught the Kata in it’s pure form and then split it into sections to perform a dynamic display of bunkai (application of Kata) against three attackers. The techniques applied were both creative and effective, forcing the defender to constantly think of their body position and balance to both block and counter their multiple opponents.
At the end of the course there was one more important thing to do and that was for all the students to sing 'Happy Birthday' to Sensei Bob Rhodes who celebrated his 70th birthday the day before.
We would like to thank Sensei Bob Rhodes for teaching at Chelmsford SKC's and also thank everyone who attended from Stoke By Nayland, Shin Gi Tai, Stock and, of course, Chelmsford.
