On Sunday the 2 March, Wayne Lottering, Pamela Pickwick and Richard Naylor-Jones attended the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) Referees and Judges Training Course in Lichfield.
All three were attending the course to continue their learning and development under the expert tuition of Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan, Chief Instructor of the KUGB) and Sensei Bob Poynton (8th Dan, National Administrator).
This day-long course is ‘Free of charge’ and is open to all KUGB adult Black Belts and was very well attended. Amongst the group there were a number of people who had attended our Referees and Judges Workshop in February and also the previous day’s Tiger Competition: Dave Moore and Andrew Steele from Ipswich Higashi; Jason Sanchez and Roy Smith from Stock; and Debbie Robertson from Handbridge SKC.

The course began with a review of the Rule Book, with the opportunity for those attending to seek clarification and gain a good understanding of KUGB Competition Rules.

Those taking either the Judges or Referees examination were then asked to stay in the room to take a written paper whilst the remaining group took an early lunch.
To continue the learning process, everyone participating (those being assessed and those not) were asked to set the room up for a competition, marking out the match area, setting up the Control Table and organizing all the necessary equipment.
Once set up and prior to the Competitors arriving, Sensei Sherry took all the participants through the Judges Signals to ensure they showed clear and correct flag signals.

It was then time for the practical with Competitors arriving from Tamworth SKC and Solihull Karate Academy. The competition involved a number of categories, split by Adult and Children including Individual and Team Kumite and Individual Kata events. Pamela and Wayne had plenty of opportunity to do some Judging and also, with Rob Welsh’s guidance, work the Control Table.

Richard, who is already a Qualified Referee, in the meantime took on his role supporting the KUGB Facebook Page and took some photographs.
At the end of the course everyone was given feedback, with Pamela and Wayne understanding the areas they need to work on ready for the examination at the next course in October.

If you are an adult Black Belt, a KUGB member and are interested in becoming a Judge and Referee you should attend the course. This includes Instructors, Coaches and Competitors!
