Chelmsford SKC News Article

Chelmsford Karate Club are very proud to be featured in the Chelmsford & Mid Essex Times as a result of our event on Sunday where we supported the national ‘Time to Talk’ campaign to get people across the country talking about Mental Health.

The event, at Dovedale Sports Centre, included a ‘free Karate Taster’ session open to the general public where people had the opportunity to train alongside our Club members that included British, European and World Champions.

Amongst the large number of attendees we were very pleased to have three special guests support the event and to help raise awareness of this important subject - Councillor Julia Jeapes, Councillor Bob Massey and Councillor Stephanie Scott.

At the end of the free taster class Sensei Richard Naylor-Jones, Club Instructor and Active Essex All Together Ambassador for Disability Sport, spoke about the importance of mental health and encouraged people to take time to talk with others especially if they see they are struggling.  He also explained that he was proud to have both Richard Kheder and Jack Somers who are KUGB Mental Health Ambassadors also supporting the event.

Following on from this Councillor Stephanie Scott and Councillor Bob Massey made presentations to Romilly Pope, Jessica Steadman, Megan Naylor-Jones and Ella Roberts in recognition of them each achieving their Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) ‘Young Leaders’ at Gold Level.   A picture of which is featured in the newspaper.

Councillor Julia Jeapes then presented special awards to KUGB England International stars Mia Hillsden and Jack Somers for their outstanding achievements in 2017.  Mia won Gold in the Cadet Kata at the World Championships in Italy whilst Jack Somers won both Bronze in the Senior Men’s Kata at the World’s and Silver in the Team at the Europeans.

The event closed with the opportunity for all those attending to take 'time to talk' with cake and refreshments provided by the Oddfellows Arms Pub.

Chelmsford as part of the KUGB are raising money for Mind the Mental Health Charity and we thank everyone who made a donation.

The Club would like to thank everyone who came along to support this day, our special guests Councillor Julia Jeapes, Councillor Bob Massey and Councillor Stephanie Scott and also Dovedale Sports Centre and their staff for sponsoring this event.
