Jess and Mia at the KUGB's Grand Slam

Each year the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) holds two Grand Slam competitions to give the National Squads experience of competing at an International level.  It also gives the Coaches an opportunity to look at potential candidates for selection for the European Championships later in the year.

Two of our three KUGB England Squad Members, Jess Steadman and Mia Hillsden, travelled to Chesterfield to compete, not for medals or trophies, but for the pride of representing their Country.

After a rigorous Squad Session the competition began.  In the Individual Kata, Jess was unlucky not to go further through the rounds, but gave a good account of herself considering she has just completed her GCSE's and managed to train all the way through.  Also in the Kata, Mia won her rounds to bag herself a place in the final of the Senior Ladies Kata.  For Mia, who is still Under 16, this was a great achievement and she took 4th place in the final with Kata Gankaku.

In the Individual Kumite Mia also fought well through the rounds beating Leeds Shotokan's Miranda Ngonji for the top position.

All in all it was a busy day for our competitors and for Sensei Richard and Sensei Jane who went their to support them but also look after the KUGB's social media and website.
