Chelmsford SKC News Article

Congratulations to Teah Pope and Eric Austin-Coskry who were selected onto the Karate Union of Great Britain's (KUGB) England Kata Squad.

Both Teah and Eric were KUGB England Squad members last year.  This year, however, Eric has moved from the Kumite Squad to the Kata Squad following on from being part of the Chelmsford Adult Team Kata that came First at the KUGB National Championships in 2013. Whilst Teah has been re-selected after representing England in Kata at the World Championships last September.

Last Saturday they, alongside Karate athletes from all over England, traveled to the world famous Liverpool Red Triangle in the hope of being selected for the KUGB's England Kata Squad.

Teah and Eric faced selection in front of England Squad Coach and the KUGB's Chief Instructor, Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan).  They both were under no illusion on the high standard expected as KUGB England has had tremendous success over the many years of international competition. Last year alone, Hisham Saif won the the World Senior Male Individual Kata and Jack Somers the European Senior Male Individual Kata. Both Champions were In Liverpool for re-selection so competition for places on the squad were fiercely contested.

Congratulations for KUGB England Kata Squad re-selection also go to former Chelmsford SKC Members: Holly Sterling and Jack Somers, as well as Cristina Finta who trained with us last year whilst on assignment in London.

Teah and Eric's selection builds on last weeks good news when Jamie Lottering was selected for the KUGB England Junior Kumite Squad.

Sensei Jane, herself a former member of the KUGB England Team, said  "I am very pleased that both Teah and Eric were selected.  They have both been working extremely hard in recent months and this, along with the dedication and commitment to their training over the years, has helped them reach this high standard. Teah, Eric and Jamie will compete in two Grand Slams (England, Ireland, N. Ireland, Scotland and Wales) this year.  The first Grand Slam will be in March and we are looking forward to supporting these three tremendous young athletes".

Congratulations from everyone at Chelmsford SKC.
