Chelmsford SKC News Article

Last week, Chelmsford Karate Club youngsters Alexander Lockett (aged 11) and Jessica Steadman (aged 15) both successfully passed their Second Dan Black belts in Paignton, Devon last week.

The duo, along with a large group of Students and Instructors from our Club, traveled to Devon, for a week long course with the Karate Union of Great Britain’s (KUGB) Senior Instructors. The KUGB, as the largest single style Karate organization in the UK, have a strong team of world famous Karate Masters and twice a year they all come together to hold a residential course for Karate enthusiasts from the UK and abroad.  The Instructor's list is one of Karate legends - Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan), Sensei Terry O'Neill (8th Dan), Sensei Bob Poynton (8th Dan), Sensei Bob Rhodes (8th Dan), Sensei Billy Higgins (8th Dan) and Sensei Frank Brennan (8th Dan).

The course itself was fantastic with nine lessons throughout the week, plus two extra lessons for Brown and Black belts looking to grade in the near future.  In addition there were lectures, four Bo Classes, a friendly Kata Tournament and also Gradings for Kyu Grades and Dan Grades.  However there was also time for the Course Social on the Monday and Chelmsford added a Club Social, with so many #Chelmsfordontour at a local Fish n' Chip restaurant.

Both Alexander and Jessica have been working very hard towards their Grading examination and their attendance on the course gave them the opportunity to train with all six of the UK’s most experienced Karate Instructors as they made their final preparations.

As mentioned earlier, there was even time to fit in a Kata Competition on the Thursday, where Alexander came third in the Black Belt category and also Chelmsford’s Alicia Willis (aged 8) came fourth in the Brown Belt category.  In this friendly tournament both students competed against all ages including adults so they were outstanding!

On Friday the final day of the course the examination took place and the duo performed extremely well to meet the high standards expected of grading examiners Sensei Andy Sherry (9th Dan), Chief Instructor and Chairman of the KUGB and Sensei Frank Brennan (8th Dan) England Junior Squad Coach. Once it was announced that Alexander and Jessica had both passed they were immediately congratulated by the large following of Chelmsford teammates, friends and family.

Chelmsford Instructor Sensei Richard Naylor-Jones (5th Dan), who attended the residential course to both train and support them, said “Alexander and Jessica were magnificent.  Ever since the Club was established fifty years ago we have gained a reputation nationally for consistently producing outstanding students and for them to both pass at this high level at such a young age is fantastic!”
