The Parents' GUIDE TO
JUNIOR KARATE
(10-17)

Introduction

Older children and teenagers start karate for many different reasons. Some want to build confidence, some are looking for a new challenge, while others simply want to get fitter, learn a new skill or find an activity where they feel they belong. Whatever your child's reason for coming through our doors, they'll be welcomed here. Our aim is to help every student become more confident, resilient and capable, both inside and outside the dojo.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call us or WhatsApp on 07973 672663.

Why choose Karate?

Karate offers teenagers far more than just an hour of exercise each week. It develops confidence, resilience and self-discipline while helping young people stay active, manage challenges and build skills that will benefit them for life.

Our Junior Karate programme is designed for young people aged 10 to 17, whether they're complete beginners or progressing from our Shotokan Tiger Nation programme.

Every student is encouraged to develop at their own pace in a supportive environment where effort, respect and perseverance are valued as highly as achievement.

As students progress, they have opportunities to work towards gradings, take part in competitions if they choose, complete their Duke of Edinburgh's Award, develop leadership skills through our Young Leaders programme and, for those who wish, continue their journey towards black belt and beyond.

"Karate doesn't change who you are. It helps you discover who you're capable of becoming."

What Happens in a Typical Lesson?

Junior Karate classes are active, varied and structured. Students develop their techniques through a combination of kihon (basic techniques), kata (patterns), partner exercises, fitness and controlled sparring, with every lesson building on the last.

Whether a student is training for their next grading, preparing for a competition or simply enjoying learning something new, our instructors help every individual progress at a pace that's right for them.

“Jess is now a 2nd Dan Black Belt, a KUGB Young Leader (Gold Level) and is on the KUGB England Squad for the second year.

We would recommend the Club to anyone interested in learning from scratch of developing existing skills. Jess describes the club as her 'Karate Family' which just about says it all!"

“Our daughter, Jess, joined Chelmsford Karate Club 9 years ago, having previously trained at another club.  It became clear very quickly that this was a very different kind of club with a very different ethos - not about chasing grades or prizes but about training hard, working together and supporting each other.  Jess thoroughly enjoys every minute of her Karate.  The instruction is exemplary and there are many opportunities to take part in competitions."

Gradings

Working towards a new belt gives students clear goals and a real sense of achievement. Gradings are only taken when a student is ready, and our instructors carefully monitor each individual's progress before inviting them to grade.

Every successful grading is recognised with an official KUGB certificate, celebrating the hard work and commitment that has gone into reaching the next stage of their karate journey.

For those who would like to test themselves, there are opportunities to take part in local, regional and national competitions in a safe and well-organised environment.

Whether a student chooses to compete or not, every achievement and personal milestone is valued equally at Chelmsford Karate Club.

Competitions

Competition is entirely optional. Many of our students simply enjoy training, working towards their next grading and developing their karate without ever competing.

Leadership & Duke of Edinburgh

Karate is about much more than learning techniques. As students grow in confidence and experience, they have opportunities to take on greater responsibility through our Young Leaders programme, helping to support and inspire younger members.

Chelmsford Karate Club is proud to support students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh's Award. We work closely with each individual to help them achieve their goals, whether that's progressing through their karate gradings, developing leadership skills or volunteering within the club.

For many young people, karate is an enjoyable and rewarding way to complete sections of their Award while continuing to develop confidence, resilience and valuable life skills.
